[News] They mock me for frying akara but I’m happy doing it’

Nathaniel Bulus, 18 is gaining popularity as the akara frying young boy around Top area of Rayfield in Jos South local government area of Plateau State. Wearing jean trousers and a T.Shirt, Nathaniel fries akara which he serves with pap to several customers who sit inside his make-shift shack made from corrugated roofing sheets. From assisting his mother, who used to fry akara in the evenings, Nathaniel said he took over the business at the age of 11 and has now been fully in charge of the akara place in the last seven years.
Growing up, I saw my mum frying akara as a business and assisted her whenever I could but she left it for me when she fell ill. She knows that I am capable of taking care of the business, so she is at home now resting,” he said. The teenager said his mother sometimes visits the place to observe and offer suggestions. He said from the business his family is able to feed as well as pay his school fees and other supplies.
My mum has worked very hard for us and I think she should be resting now. This business also gives me something to do instead of being idle,” he said. Nathaniel who is also an SS2 student said though there are those who encourage him and wish him well, there are also some who call him names for frying akara by the roadside. “Some of my school mates pass by and they mock me for frying and selling Akara but I don’t care, I am happy doing it because I know the benefits and how this akara business has assisted my family,” he said. He explained that frying akara was a family business adding, “when I finish my school I can either find something better to do or modernise the business, but for now I am happy doing it.” Mr. Set Ezekiel, a resident of Rayfield and a major customer of Nathaniel encouraged him to pursue the business with humility stressing that there is no gender discrimination in business. “Whether you are a man or woman as long as the business puts food on the table then don’t hesitate, what Nathaniel is doing is a challenge to other young boys especially youths who are waiting for white kola jobs,” he said. “Nathaniel may encounter a lot of challenges because most of his peers may try to discourage him but he must not mind them, because every successful man in this world has a story to tell. And one day he will grow from grass to grace.”
